English Language Development Program

The English Language Development Program (ELDP) is aimed at giving students a reasonable command of the English language in order to enable them to attend their academic programs without language difficulties.

A placement test is required of all students applying for admission to TRINITY in order to determine their English language competence and accommodate their individual needs.

This requirement may be waived, at the discretion of the Admissions Committee, if the student produces evidence of having achieved a score of 550 in the TOEFL test during the last two years or has acquired either the Cambridge or the Michigan Proficiency Certificate with a passing grade of B or better during the last three years.

Depending on which level the student is placed in, he/she will receive 12, 9, or 6 hours of classroom instruction per week. Additionally, he/she will attend the language laboratory and be assigned reading, writing and internet assignments. Each course runs for one semester.

Students are placed into one of three different levels. Students attending the DEP-102 and DEP-103 courses may also attend one or more credit courses at TRINITY. Examples of courses that could be attended are: GRK-101 (Modern Greek); and COS-101 (Introduction to Computers).

Each of the ELDP courses must be passed with a minimum grade of D (1.0) before a student can graduate into the next level of the program. Upon completion of a course the student will once again take a Placement Test to determine whether he/she is ready for entrance to regular TRINITY courses or if he/she requires further English Instruction. The Admissions Committee can place the student into any of the three courses (DEP-101, DEP-102 or DEP-103) depending on his/her score on the placement test. In other words, the student may not need to take all three English Language Development Courses.

In short, the English Language Development Program is an intensive English language training program that prepares students for academic success and for their future careers, and allows them to communicate confidently and efficiently in an English speaking environment.
